Let Someone Else Drive: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Arrives Next April With Its Biggest World Yet

After what feels like an eternity, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation finally has a release date. It's arriving on April 8, 2027, which lands almost exactly seven years to the day after the original FF7 Remake launched back on April 10, 2020. Square Enix made the announcement during the latest PlayStation State of Play and brought one of the chunkiest trailers we've seen from the project so far.

The trailer focuses mostly on the party. We got proper introductions for Cid and Vincent, which means the whole original cast from 1997 is finally accounted for in remake form — not bad for a trilogy closer. There are also some nice glimpses of Wutai, and honestly, Yuffie fans are going to eat it up. It's her home turf, and it looks like the devs packed it with plenty to poke around in.

But the real meat came after the trailer. Square went deep on actual open-world gameplay, and this thing looks massive. The party can now leap off the Highwind, which is basically the team's version of a Fortnite battle bus moment. Once you're on the ground, things get even more interesting. Yuffie, for instance, has a grapple gun that turns traversal into something closer to a playground than a slog.

Maybe the biggest shift, though, is who you're actually playing as. Out in the open world, you're no longer locked to Cloud. You can pick your main character, and that choice apparently bleeds into the side quests, which Square says can play out differently depending on who you roll with. That alone changes the feel of the whole game.

Seems like the team heard the feedback that Rebirth was too big for some players and decided to just go bigger anyway. Revelation is looking colossal, and with director Naoki Hamaguchi teasing more spin-off characters and compilation references, it's clear the devs are swinging for the fences. Apparently they "thought really hard" about how to fit those pieces into the trilogy's finale.

Honestly? I'm here for it. This is shaping up to be the sendoff FF7 fans have waited decades for. No pressure, Square.
