Konami's Obscure NES Mashup Just Got Reborn as a Free-to-Play Roblox-Like

Every once in a while, Konami's press showcases serve up something genuinely unexpected. This one did—though maybe not in the way you'd hope. Wai Wai World Craft is a modern spin on a bizarre Famicom-era crossover that never made it West, and instead of reviving that classic action-platforming feel, it's basically Konami trying its hand at Roblox.

The original Wai Wai World came out in 1988 and remains a cult curiosity among retro fans. It's a Castlevania-style platformer where you rescue characters from various Konami games. Simon Belmont shows up. So does Mikey from The Goonies. Each stage is themed around a different franchise, and clearing it unlocks that game's hero. Before Smash Bros. made crossover fighting a household concept, that sort of thing was a wild novelty.

Wai Wai World Craft, on the other hand, is a user-generated content platform. You create stages, share them online, and mess around with friends. It still includes familiar faces like Simon and Contra's Bill Rizer, but the genre has shifted completely.

Executive director Hiroshi Tanibuchi explains it as a game where you can take existing games as building blocks and "add your personal touch by changing the rules, introducing new enemies and gameplay mechanics, and customizing the stages and game world."

Honestly, the brief footage shown looks simple—maybe even a bit stiff. The creation tools resemble Minecraft, but the presentation and multiplayer hooks are pure Roblox. The catch? From what was shown, these tools appear far more limited than Roblox's.

Look, I'm not a market analyst. But aiming a watered-down Roblox at kids who have no nostalgia for Konami's classic catalog feels like a weird play. Maybe I'm just bitter because we still haven't gotten an official English version of the original Wai Wai World. That game's a piece of gaming history, and watching its legacy turn into a free-to-play builder for young mobile players stings a little.

Wai Wai World Craft is coming to PC and mobile eventually, free to play. We'll have to wait and see if there's more to it than the presentation suggested. For now, this retro crossover's return feels less like a revival and more like a strange reincarnation.
